Beany Brain #82: ADHD Reframe + The 1-Minute Rule Exception

Beany Brain: loving our jumping-bean brains!

Welcome to this issue of the Beany Brain! I hope today’s newsletter will bounce us up as we contemplate the upsides and challenges of being neurodivergent, a little beauty, some creativity, and just general yeehawesomeness.

ADHD Reframe

“Traditional education rewards sustained attention to predetermined tasks,” said Le Cunff. “The result is that many hypercurious kids feel miserable suppressing their natural curiosity rather than learning how to leverage it. Hypercurious minds deserve better systems and better stories.”

Anne-Laure Le Cunff

Researcher Anne-Laure Le Cunff at King’s College London is researching a reframe: What if roaming ADHD thoughts point to hypercuriosity and not an attention deficit?

What do you think?

As someone with a hyper ADHD brain, I like this reframe.

Squirrel!

Oh wait. Is it a red one or a gray one? Did you know that they are rodents and that a group of them is called a scurry? Babies are “kits.”

My thoughts might be flying squirrels, but they’re definitely interesting.

Fast as fast can be, you’ll never catch them. But just like a squirrel on a birdfeeder, they might pause for a snack.

Ha Ha Haiku

A funny haiku for you every week in every newsletter, whether it’s one of my own or one I curate for you. HA. Ha. Haiku.

The 1-Minute Rule Exception

Me: The 1-minute rule! Yes! I’m so awesome. And smug. Anything that takes less than 1 minute, I do it! I can put that stamp card away with my other stamp cards in this Ziploc bag. I can wipe that counter. I can rescrew that screw into the bottom of the chair. Look at me go! I can dry that pan and put it away under the stove. I can start a load of laundry. Wheeeeeeee!

Blood Sugar: Yo. I am the exception. Me. Moi. I do not take no for an answer. I don’t give a flying fig about your stupid 1-minute rule. Now give me a (flying) dried fig. Right now. In less than one minute.

Me: HA!!!!!! Blood Sugar, you are wrong! If I give you a snack in less than a minute then you fit into the 1-minute rule. You are NOT SPECIAL.

1-Minute Rule: You’re both crazy.

Yeehawesome!

Yeehawesome! is a happy-brain roundup in each issue of Beany Brain. What’s happening that’s good in brain land? What’s bringing me joy?

  1. I didn’t actually go into the London Transport Museum last year with my 3 guys, but I did find that I loved their wonderful gift shop (so many amazing modern and retro designs)! Check out the postcard I bought that was from a 1925 piece of Underground art by artist Mary Koop. Last week I did a bit of a clean out and found this frame that fit the postcard just so, and I’m enjoying seeing it in the kitchen.

  2. Ordinary Indians give huge amounts of charitable donations every year!

  3. Northern Ireland comedian Emer Maguire tells a funny story about her autism assistance dog:

Quote of the Week

Beany Brownie Points and Extra Bonus Funniness

Wonderful Wednesday

Wonderful Wednesday was a day once a year in college when they would suddenly and surprisingly call off all classes and we’d play all day. The cafeteria provided special fun food and we’d do stuff outside like slip ‘n slides and jello wrestling in sumo suits. This segment of Beany Brain is dedicated to that memory of silliness and fun—no words, just a photo from the week that I’ve taken or found that reminds me to let the joy in. Since Beany Brain is published on Wednesday every week (at least, Wednesday in Japan), I hope you enjoy this Wonderful Wednesday.
